Where to Stay in Chittagong
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Chittagong splits into two distinct moods. The upper city climbs green hills. The lower city flattens toward the port. GEC Circle and Khulshi house the best restaurants and upscale hotels. Landscaped streets rise toward the Chittagong hills. Agrabad holds the business district and most mid-range rooms. Sea salt and diesel drift up from the harbor, only a few kilometers south.
A solid mid-range double costs BDT 2,500-7,000 in most central neighborhoods. GEC Circle and Khulshi push noticeably higher. Budget beds begin at BDT 800 in guesthouses near the old bazaar. The Radisson Blu caps Chittagong's luxury end.

GEC Circle is the commercial and social heart of modern Chittagong. Air-conditioned malls, the city's best restaurants, and its only internationally branded hotel sit within a few blocks. The roads are broad. Footpaths stay lit at night. Cool hum from shopping-complex air-conditioning spills onto the pavement after dark. GEC Circle is the default first choice for visitors who want convenience without navigating the old city.
- ✓ Radisson Blu places the city's only five-star hotel within easy reach of the main commercial strip.
- ✓ Best concentration of restaurants and cafes in Chittagong
- ✓ Shopping malls and pharmacies within a five-minute walk
- ✓ Well-lit streets comfortable for evening walks
- ✗ Room rates are noticeably higher than comparable quality in Agrabad or Panchlaish.
- ✗ Traffic bottlenecks during evening rush make CNG rides frustratingly slow

Agrabad is Chittagong's original commercial district. It stretches along the flatlands near the Export Processing Zone and the port authority offices. Banks, shipping companies, and trading houses fill the ground floors of mid-rise blocks. The air carries a faint tang of ship fuel that never entirely leaves the lower city. Agrabad suits business travelers more than tourists. A short CNG ride reaches the Ethnological Museum and the waterfront.
- ✓ Walking distance to the Ethnological Museum of Bangladesh
- ✓ Dense concentration of restaurants serving fresh Bay of Bengal seafood
- ✓ Easy CNG auto-rickshaw connections to every neighborhood
- ✓ Lower room rates than GEC for broadly comparable quality
- ✗ Heavy goods-vehicle traffic on the main commercial roads runs all day with no quiet period.
- ✗ Fewer leisure attractions within walking distance compared to GEC or Khulshi

Khulshi is Chittagong's most sought-after residential neighborhood. It climbs the city's signature green hills. Wealthy families occupy bungalows screened by bougainvillea and jackfruit trees. The streets are quieter than anywhere else in the city. Night jasmine scents the air after dark. Rooftop views stretch across the Karnaphuli River valley on clear winter mornings. Hotels here are fewer but calmer. They suit travelers who want the city within reach but without the noise.
- ✓ Quietest sleeping environment in Chittagong with genuine night silence away from the port.
- ✓ Hill walks with river valley views accessible on foot from most properties
- ✓ High-end restaurants and a relaxed cafe scene along Khulshi Road
- ✓ Low-traffic residential streets safe for walking after dark
- ✗ Requires a CNG auto-rickshaw to reach the commercial center, train station, or old city bazaars.
- ✗ Limited street food compared to Chawkbazar or Panchlaish

Panchlaish is a transitional neighborhood between Khulshi and GEC Circle. Residential streets blend with a steady stream of cafes, pharmacies, and clothing shops. They serve the city's middle-class households. Walking is easier here than on the steeper parts of Khulshi. Street-food lanes smell of freshly fried jilapi and charcoal-grilled kebabs after 6pm. Office workers eat standing at portable iron griddles.
- ✓ Rich evening street-food scene within walking distance of every hotel in the area.
- ✓ Well-connected by CNG to GEC Circle, Agrabad, and the train station
- ✓ Neighborhood pharmacies and clinics useful for extended visits
- ✓ Lively atmosphere without the predawn noise of Chawkbazar or Kotwali
- ✗ Few tourist sights within walking distance requiring a CNG for almost every excursion.
- ✗ Intermittent road construction makes footpaths temporarily impassable

The old city throbs. Wholesale fabric traders, spice merchants, jewelers cram lanes so tight the noon air tastes of turmeric dust and handcart porters shouting for space. The Anderkilla Mosque holds the eastern edge. White minarets rise above rooftops three streets away. Staying here drops you into Chittagong's oldest commercial DNA. Ear plugs help. Market stalls open before 5am.
- ✓ Lowest room rates in the central city
- ✓ Immediate access to old bazaar markets and the most concentrated street-food density in Chittagong
- ✓ Historic Anderkilla Mosque and surrounding lanes accessible on foot
- ✓ Authentic local atmosphere absent from GEC or Khulshi
- ✗ Noisy from predawn market activity every day without exception
- ✗ No parking available. Personal vehicles become a liability
The administrative center where the Chittagong Railway Station anchors one end and colonial-era government offices line broad avenues leading toward Laldighi Park. Rickshaws cluster at every corner. Diesel from the station platform mixes with the sweet scent of mishti doi sold from open clay pots at the railway-gate stalls. Arrival is easy here. First-night logic before you branch out.
- ✓ Chittagong Railway Station within walking distance for arrivals and early-morning departures
- ✓ Plentiful CNG and bus connections to every neighborhood from the station forecourt
- ✓ Dense concentration of budget restaurants near the station gate serving from early morning
- ✓ Direct bus access to Cox's Bazar and Dhaka from nearby terminals
- ✗ Daytime crowds and vehicle noise around the station are relentless and unavoidable
- ✗ Narrow streets difficult to navigate with large luggage toward most hotels
At the southern tip of the city where the Karnaphuli River empties into the Bay of Bengal, Potenga is home to Shah Amanat International Airport and the long sandy stretch of Potenga Beach. The air is always salty. Wind blows hard off the water. Families crowd the public beach eating grilled corn and watching cargo ships slide past on the horizon, horns low and foggy at distance. Naval Beach, visible through fencing nearby, adds quiet military formality to the shoreline.
- ✓ Walking distance to Potenga Beach for sunrise and afternoon sea views
- ✓ Closest accommodation to Shah Amanat International Airport
- ✓ Quieter than the city center with strong sea breezes that break the humidity
- ✓ Fresh seafood at beach-side stalls from midafternoon onward
- ✗ Distance from main city sights requires a CNG for almost every excursion
- ✗ Beach becomes crowded and littered on weekends and public holidays
The northern stretch of Chittagong feels different from the port-side south, defined by the old Railway Workshop colony, the green still waters of Foy's Lake, and a hillier topography that muffles city noise. The Chittagong War Cemetery, immaculately maintained and shaded by ancient rain trees, sits in this zone and brings contemplative visitors throughout the day. Pahartali suits travelers who want a calmer base with a short, direct CNG ride to the commercial center.
- ✓ Chittagong War Cemetery within easy walking distance and moving to visit
- ✓ Foy's Lake Amusement World and rowboat hire accessible within a few minutes
- ✓ Quieter road traffic compared to the lower city neighborhoods
- ✓ Green hillside walking paths accessible from most properties on foot
- ✗ Further from commercial centers, bazaars, and the main restaurant strip
- ✗ Fewer dining options than GEC or Panchlaish

Accommodation Types
From budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels, here's what's available.
International and local hotels span every tier in GEC Circle and Agrabad, with the Radisson Blu as Chittagong's sole five-star property.
Best for: Business travelers, first-time international visitors, and anyone requiring daily housekeeping and a 24-hour front desk
Family-run properties in Khulshi, Panchlaish, and Pahartali occupying upper floors of residential buildings, with shared rooftops and home-cooked breakfasts.
Best for: Longer-stay visitors and travelers who prefer local hospitality and a quieter street environment over hotel formality
Expat port consultants and long-stay NGO staff lease furnished flats in Khulshi and Nasirabad by the week or the month.
Best for: Book these for stays of one week or more. You will want a kitchen, a living room, and a quieter address away from hotel corridors.
Simple properties near Potenga Beach fit travelers wanting beach access or a short walk to Shah Amanat Airport before onward flights.
Best for: Choose these for beach-focused days or for airport-proximity accommodation before an early-morning domestic or international connection.
Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
Chittagong's best hotels fill completely during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as Dhaka residents travel south for the holiday. Book GEC Circle and Khulshi properties four to six weeks ahead for those dates. Chawkbazar and Kotwali budget hotels generally hold capacity until a few days before the holiday begins.
Agrabad's flat topography makes it prone to brief but deep flooding during the June-to-September monsoon season. Request a room on the third floor or above at any Agrabad hotel during those months. Ground and first-floor rooms can be unusable for a full day following a heavy overnight downpour.
Small guesthouses near Potenga Beach rarely update their online availability accurately. A phone call the afternoon before arrival confirms the room. Owners often arrange a CNG from the airport terminal. This avoids informal fare haggling at the arrivals gate.
At most Chittagong hotels outside the Radisson Blu, a four-night stay presented politely at check-in yields a visible discount from the listed rate. This applies most reliably to mid-range properties in Agrabad and Kotwali. They carry high listed rates but operate with flexible occupancy margins for longer bookings.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Reserve at least four weeks ahead for November through February and during Eid holidays. GEC Circle and Khulshi properties sell out within days of availability opening.
March to May and late September to October bring manageable weather and noticeably lower rates across the city. One week's notice is sufficient at most mid-range properties.
June through mid-September is the full monsoon. Rates drop sharply and walk-in availability is common outside public holidays. Expect humid air thick enough to feel on the skin, heavy rain from midafternoon onward, and the smell of wet red earth through open windows.
Two weeks ahead covers most visits outside Eid and the peak December-January window. GEC Circle and Khulshi properties need four to six weeks for holiday weekends in cool season.
